LOCATION:
Andromar is located in the neighborhood of
Deep Creek, on the island of South Andros. South Andros is the
southernmost section of the Andros archipelago, the largest island
area in the Bahamas... about 100 miles long by 40 miles wide, with a
lovely population density of about 1 person per square mile.
Andros is parallel with the Florida Keys, easily accessible from both
Florida and Nassau. Refreshingly un-touristed, the secret paradise
of fly fishermen for decades (including Hemingway) and barely changed by
time, Andros still features the great beaches, great people, great
fishing, and great peace that have made it a classic island destination. |

AIRLINES:
Despite its remote atmosphere, Andros is remarkably easy to get to.
Fly on almost any major airline into Nassau, and then take a 10 minute
flight on Western Air (www.westernairbahamas.com) from Nassau to
Congotown Airport. Western flies 2 scheduled round trip per day,
every day. Lynx Air currently flies two round trips per week from
Miami. There are also many charter services available: we
likeTransCaribbean Air from Ft. Lauderdale. |
CAR RENTAL:
You can take a taxi from Congotown airport
to Andromar (about a 20 minute drive), but you'll probably want a car
while you're here, unless you really enjoy bicycling, to explore the 30
mile coastline, villages and shops. No major car rental agencies
serve Andros; we can connect you with reputable local operators. |

WEATHER:
Wintertime (November - March) is "high season" in the Bahamas because
the weather is so mild, typically high 70s(F) in the daytime and low 60s
at night. Summertime can average 20 degrees higher, but is
accompanied by blissfully warm waters. Note, "hurricane season" is
typically August-October. |
COMMUNICATIONS:
There is a phone at Andromar: bring a calling card for long distance
(about 10 cents per minute if you have a good carrier.) Cellphone
coverage in South Andros is spotty, and roaming charges are outrageous,
so we recommend turning your phone off, and checking messages and
returning calls with your calling card or Skype, if you have brought a
computer. DSL is available at the house; email can also be
accessed at Internet kiosks at the Nassau airport international lounge,
and at the Government Complex on Andros, about 10 miles from
Andromar. You can also buy an international prepaid calling card
in the Nassau airport or at the Batelco office on Andros to use at pay
phones on the island ($1/minute). |
DINING:
There are a few good family run restaurants
on South Andros - details will be provided in your welcome package - as
well as small markets for groceries, liquor and fresh produce...
including local specialties, such as the land crabs which Androsians
capture and export as a cash crop. Special requests at the
restaurants are welcome with a day's notice, including cooking your own
catch. |

WHAT TO TAKE HOME (SHOPPING):
Not much to buy here. Enjoy the overwhelming beauty and
restfulness, and take back photos, smiles and good will. |
WHAT TO BRING:
CASH - there are no ATMs or banks on South Andros, and most places do
not take credit cards. (The closest ATM is in the Nassau
airport.) Passport required, but not a visa for US and UK
visitors. You'll want a camera,, batteries or film, sunglasses,
bathing suit, lightweight casual clothes, sun hat, sweater & long pants
for evening, sunscreen, insect repellent for swamp tours,
mask-snorkel-fins and reef shoes (important! you can't buy these things
on the island), personal medications, your favorite music CDs, your
favorite coffee, tea and in-transit snacks. Local markets provide
basic food and incidentals. There is a local clinic for immediate
care of medical emergencies. We provide all bedding and pantry
basics. Voltage for electronic equipment is AC. |
